The frog, or "kaeru" in Japanese, is a homonym for the verb "to return," making it a symbol of good fortune for safe returns, money coming back, and more. The design features a frog trying to jump onto a willow tree. This image is well known in Japan as part of the Hanafuda card game. Ono no Toufu is one of the three great calligraphers in Japanese history. Even a person of his stature faced challenges in his work. One day, while walking in the rain with an umbrella, he saw a frog trying repeatedly to jump from a pond onto a willow tree. Despite numerous attempts, the frog could not reach the willow. Just as Toufu thought it was impossible, the wind blew, causing the willow to sway, and the frog was able to make the leap. Seeing this, Toufu realized that even a small frog can achieve its goal with effort. He returned to his calligraphy with renewed determination and achieved great success.
