Three beauties of Utamaro
Medium-sized Furoshiki: 70 x 70 cm, made from organic cotton. Featuring the ukiyo-e design of Three Beauties of the Kansei Era by Kitagawa Utamaro, known for his portraits of elegant women. This furoshiki has a smooth texture and a linen-like feel with subtle ridges on the surface.
While it may feel slightly firm for use as a scarf, it is perfectly sized for wrapping gift boxes or wine bottles and works well as an eco-friendly shopping bag for small purchases. Its timeless design also makes it a popular choice for use as a decorative tapestry.
The furoshiki comes wrapped with a decorative paper band featuring a motif inspired by the pattern. The band includes an explanation of the ukiyo-e artwork in both Japanese and English, with additional tips on practical uses printed on the reverse.
About the Design:
The Three Beauties of the Kansei Era is a masterpiece by Kitagawa Utamaro, who is celebrated for his refined and graceful portrayals of women in ukiyo-e. Unlike earlier works that depicted the full body, Utamaro pioneered compositions focusing on the face. This iconic print features three renowned beauties of the Kansei period (1789–1801): Tomimoto Toyohina, Naniwaya Okita, and Takashimaya Ohisa.
The original artwork employs a technique called kirazuri (mica printing), where mica powder or shell powder is used to enhance the background with a shimmering effect. To replicate this effect, the furoshiki uses a pearl-like finish, creating a subtle sparkle when wrapped, adding an elegant accent to your presentation.
