Kohiki is a Japanese ceramic technique known for its unique three-layer structure, which creates a soft and charming shade of white. It begins with a base layer of clay, typically red (akadotsuchi), onto which a layer of white slip, known as shirokesho or “white makeup,” is applied. This is then finished with a glaze coating (yuyaku), creating the characteristic three-layer structure. It’s this technique that gives Kohiki its warm, gentle white tone.
However, this layering also makes Kohiki susceptible to stains, odors, and mold. To help prevent these effects, it’s recommended to soak the ceramic in water before use. Alternatively, one can appreciate the natural changes that develop over time, embracing the beauty and charm these variations add to the piece.
