Origin of Setta
Setta originated when Sen no Rikyu, a famous tea master, added cowhide to sandals to prevent water from seeping through on snowy days. Although some may associate setta with outdated perceptions, these sandals are a practical evolution of traditional zōri. The centrally placed thong minimizes uneven wear, making them durable and long-lasting. Traditionally, the little toe is meant to slightly extend beyond the sandal’s edge for proper fit.
